CEO Dhahran Techno Valley
Craig Smith is Chief Executive Officer of Dhahran Techno Valley Company overseeing all aspects of the Dhahran Techno Valley Science Park, from entrepreneurship development to joint ventures between multinational companies and Saudi government and academia.
Prior to arriving in Saudi Arabia, Mr. Smith founded and was Managing Director of SyLK Global Innovation, a Silicon Valley based firm that unleashes the creative power of its global clients by providing customized innovation strategy training, coaching and market entry programs.
Craig led Business Development for Emerging Technologies for 23 years at the US Department of Energy’s Sandia Labs, specializing in Renewable and Sustainable Energy Research, Cyber Security and Information Technologies. Craig has negotiated and written over 1000 agreements based on Department of Energy patents and copyrights and has over 20 years of contract negotiation and licensing experience focused on US and Asian markets.
Craig is advisor and mentor to numerous universities, including Nanyang Technological University in Singapore, where he developed an undergraduate immersion and internship program leveraging successful Silicon Valley start-up models. Craig advises students across Asia and the Middle East in launching start-up companies and is frequent judge for business competitions at schools and universities globally.
Craig is speaker and advisor to the USPTO, World Intellectual Property Organization, Brazilian Institute of Industrial Property, Vietnam’s National Office of Intellectual Property and the IP Office of Singapore often addressing Renewable Energy and IP in Global Energy Markets. He gives frequent workshops on Entrepreneurship and the Startup process, Scalable and Sustainable Innovation and Developing the Innovation Ecosystem.
Craig is a member of the Advisory Board for the Licensing Executives Society, Silicon Valley, and has served as Chairman of the Board. Selected as one of the world’s leading 300 IP strategists by Intellectual Asset Management Group in 2015 and 2016 and named Licensing Executives Society International’s Distinguished Fellow for the past two years.
Craig is a member of the Advisory Board, College of Engineering Sciences at King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals in Dhahran Saudi Arabia.
Craig holds a B.A. in Asian History from University of Puget Sound, M.B.A. in International Finance from Golden Gate University in San Francisco, studied Cleantech Economics at UC Berkeley’s Haas School of Business, Innovation and Entrepreneurship at Stanford University Graduate School and US Energy Policy at the Brookings Institution, Washington D.C.
